  2. Personal experience:
  Posted request for quotes to sort out the wiring of a ceiling rose on "rated people" website. Eventually, CPS called and said the could have a look a couple of days later. They could not give me *any* indication of possible prices except that it would be below the maximum spend I had posted. Promised to give me a quotation for the work when they were working nearby.
  Electricians turned up "to have a look" and 5 minutes later told me they had finished the job.
  I had not received the quote I had asked for and work I had not agreed to had been completed. Electrician did not know the price, and neither did anyone at CPS when he phoned. I was told I would get an invoice. Almost 4 weeks later, I received an invoice with a payment deadline that had long since passed. The invoice also threatened legal action if the deadline was missed. Calls were not answered and an email querying the £90 invoice for 5 minutes' work that I had not agreed to was met with an ultimatum of pay or face legal consequences. I paid half the amount to show some willing and further emails and phone calls went unanswered until another 3 weeks later a solicitor's letter threatened legal action. Finally got hold of the director and chief chocolate teapot Daniel Cutts who blamed the whole incompetence on his back office staff, he insisted he had a recording (without my consent) of our initial telephone conversation where I agreed to unspecified fees. Having looked into the issue he agreed that his company handled this badly but I would still have to pay. He did not like my suggestion that his workers should come round for the rest of the hourly rate and spend 55 minutes RE-wiring plugs or do the washing up. I paid simply to be shot of the hassle of every dealing with these clowns again.
